Phasmids as disease vectors?

Hello to the forum :-)

I would like to know whether Phasmids may carry any kind of diseases which can be transferred to humans for example via their feces? I am looking forward to welcome some peruphasma schultei and this is an important information which I was not able to find in the internet, though that probably means that there is no such risk.

Btw: the defensive liquid according to wikipedia does not seem to cause any permanent damage to human tissue including the eye. Is this correct?

Many thanks and best wishes

Hello John,

as far as I know, nothing related has been documented so far and I never heard from veteran breeders to have any problem. Anyway, whenever the disease is not present in the area, no chance for phasmids to get it. So, if your main worry is if it is risky to get some phasmids from captive-bred stocks in Europe...I would not be afraid at all.

In any case, hygiene is always something important in general and especially if you have pets, does not matter what kind of.

Best wishes,

Pablo

Hey there john

I have peruphasma as well and have been maced by them on the skin and in the eye and have had no problems. It was painful to get it in my eye bulb but not horrible and it faded surprisingly fast. Of course i may have only gotten a small dose. If one were to have a reaction to them then that could be a problem, dermatitis for example so be cautious of that. Otherwise they are among the very best if you ask me, beautiful, easy and hardy, a bit high strung plus the mace but my favorite by far. Good luck with them and they say they dont need to be sprayed with water but i do once a week and they all drink readily so its still good to do it.

My best

Matt
